Fishing in New South Wales
Recreational Anglers in the state of New South Wales are required to hold a NSW Fishing Licence, available at selected Service Stations in the Bay area or you may enquire at the Nelson Bay Visitors Bureau.
Fishing in the Port Stephens area, like most other popular fishing spots, varies. Anglers can however generally expect an interesting catch most months of the year. Species include Bream, Flathead, Schnapper (Squire) around the headlands, or for the deep sea enthusiast; Orange Ruffy, Ocean Cod, Mackerel, Flounder and much more. Fish from the shore minutes from Antonios or take to the sea on one of the many fishing charter vessels operating in the Nelson Bay area.
Mud crabbing is also popular however we recommend guests check with NSW Fisheries for block-out dates and 'keep' rules.
Remember: measure your catch, follow the rules :) Then come back to Antonios, cook and feast upon your prize.

Expected Temperatures on the Port Coast:
Port Stephens enjoys year-round comfortable conditions. While Spring & Autumn share temps of around 18 - 25 degrees (C), you can expect pleasant days in Winter of between 15 & 18 degrees and Highs of around 30 during the Summer months.
Pack warmly for refreshing on-shore breezes and cooler nights during Spring, Autumn & Winter. Dress wisely for the warmer months and don't forget to Slip, Slop Slap!

FISHING REPORT
Fishing on the Bay has been so, so. Plenty of small fry about the coast and wharves but the big stuff is still strong off shore.
Bream have showed recently and so have the schools of Schnapper
Flathead are coming back into season and can be caught on the sandy flats around the Soldiers Point area and peninsula tip. |
